An electric bill can look like a verdict, especially when the total is higher than expected. Start by treating it as a record, not a puzzle you must solve in one sitting. A first reading has one job: identify what time period the bill covers, how much electricity was recorded, what you are being charged for, and which questions deserve a follow-up.

Set the bill beside a calendar and begin at the account summary. Confirm the service address, the bill date, the payment due date, and the total amount due. Then find the billing period. It may say, for example, June 3 through July 2. Count the days if they are not printed. A 30-day bill and a 34-day bill should not be expected to have the same total, even if the household's daily routines did not change.

Next, locate usage, usually measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy, not the speed of your meter or an appliance setting. Write down the number without judging it. In a simple example, a bill for June 3–July 2 might show 720 kWh over 30 days. That is an average of 24 kWh per day. This calculation does not tell you why energy was used; it simply gives the rest of the bill a useful scale.

Now read the charges line by line. Many bills separate supply or generation charges from delivery, transmission, distribution, taxes, fees, and credits. Names vary by utility, but the basic distinction matters: some charges pay for the electricity itself, while others support getting it across the grid and to your home. A fixed customer charge may appear even when usage is low. Do not assume every line is a mistake because it is unfamiliar. Instead, circle anything you cannot identify and look for a definitions page, rate schedule, or utility contact number.

Using the example, imagine the bill lists a 12customercharge,12 customer charge, 86 for electricity supply, 58fordelivery,and58 for delivery, and 9 in taxes and local charges, for a $165 total. The first useful observation is not whether one category is “too high.” It is that 720 kWh, several charge types, and a 30-day period all contribute to the amount. Keep the bill’s actual numbers together; dividing the full total by kWh can be a rough reference, but it is not necessarily the price of the electricity alone.

Check whether the reading was actual or estimated. An actual reading comes from the meter or its remote reporting system. An estimate is based on prior patterns and can later be corrected. If a bill says estimated and the usage seems unusual, make a note to ask when the next actual reading will occur. Also check for a previous balance, a late fee, a deposit, a one-time adjustment, or a payment posted after the statement date. These items can change what is due without reflecting current electricity use.

Common mistakes are easy to avoid. Do not compare only the dollar total with a bill from a different-length period. Do not confuse kW, which describes power at a moment, with kWh, which measures energy used over time. Do not decide that a single appliance is responsible just because it runs often. Heating and cooling, water heating, cooking, laundry, electronics, weather, occupancy, and billing timing can overlap. This first pass is for reading facts, not assigning blame.

If a charge or usage figure still seems wrong, contact the utility or a qualified energy professional with specific questions: Was the meter read or estimated? Which rate applied? Is there an adjustment on this bill? Keep the statement and any answer you receive. Do not open an electric panel, remove a meter seal, or test wiring to investigate a bill. Meter equipment and household electrical systems can be hazardous, and only authorized utility staff or licensed electricians should service them.
